Keep Calm And Carry On Resisting
No Matter What
Man. It’s been a month! The No Kings Protest was deliciously well attended ~ (hooray) and then ICE activity ramped up (boo). And to the folks who came out to hold signs, well, you are all needed in the streets again. Leave the signs at home, but roll up your sleeves. Here are some ways to keep resisting while making a lasting difference:
Offer Notary Public Services. Use these links to find Family Preparedness Packets. Print them and offer your services, free of charge, to families at risk of deportation. Partnering with church leaders can be a good way to find the populations you can serve.
Adopt a Day Laborer Corner. Visit the National Day Laborer Organizing Network website and learn how to Adopt a Day Labor Corner in your town. They have frequent online trainings and they operate across the nation.
Accompaniment. Many of your at-risk neighbors want a US citizens to drive and go with them to their court appointments. You may not be allowed to enter the ICE building, but you can communicate by phone with the person inside and talk to the ICE agents. If they are detained on the spot, the information you relay back to their loved ones is essential.
Tabling. Organizations providing food, resistance efforts, voter registration, and hotline numbers need help getting their messages out into the community. Offering to man a table at a popular event is a great way to amplify causes you care about. Pass out fliers and inform people what grassroots and non-profits they can use and support.
Constituent Changemakers. The ACLU says, “Oftentimes, it is the voice of everyday people in their communities that can push a lawmaker in the right direction.” And that’s true! The ACLU will train you to help create the change you support.
Volunteer Anywhere. Use FindHelp.org to connect yourself and others to community resources. If you can volunteer anywhere, even better! This single site covers everything from food, to transit, to financial resources all in your zip code. It is a one stop shop for all kinds of assistance and probably the most comprehensive website on resources I have ever found. Please use it and spread the word!
We all have unique gifts we can offer, so be brave. The list above is just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe you share a free yoga class for a local Rapid Response Network of folks. Maybe you create a Dia de los Muertos altar showing photos of the community members who have been taken by ICE since January 2025. Maybe you offer some hours of graphic design work to a cause you support.
This Halloween I dare you to get out there, be creative, and share your unique talents as an act of loving resistance to the status quo. Together we are pretty darned impressive. Let’s keep it that way.
How will you resist? I’d love to hear ~
